The classic 1960's rock 'n' roll inspired musical
The third show in CMT's Music Circus series is a new production of that perennial classic Bye Bye Birdie. Written by Michael Stewart, who would later pen Hello Dolly!, this gloriously sweet and fluffy show first premiered on Broadway in 1960 and won four Tonys. Among the classic numbers in its rock 'n' roll inspired score are How Lovely to Be A Woman and Honestly Sincerely.
The musical's story, inspired by the drafting of Elvis Presley, revolves around the hip-shaking singer Conrad Birdie, who is due to head overseas on military service. Before he departs, his money-grabbing manager organises one final publicity stunt - Conrad will pick one High School girl at random and kiss hiss her live on the Ed Sullivan Show. The lucky winner of the raffle is Kim McAfee, but is her sleepy hometown in Ohio ready for the media circus which is about to strike?
